A new theatrical trailer for The Fault in Our Stars has been released, and it’s a journey from the song-filled support-group room to the bedroom for Shailene Woodley‘s terminally ill teenager, Hazel.

The trailer for Josh Boone‘s big-screen adaptation of John Green‘s best-selling novel begins with Hazel, who is shown without any breathing tubes in her nose. “I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories,” she says via voiceover. “On the one hand, you can sugarcoat it, how nothing is too messed up that can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version as much as the next girl does — it’s just not the truth.”
So what is the truth about her sad story? “Doctor’s appointments, reality shows, worst of all, support group,” complete with a few too many songs played on guitar. And when her parents encourage her to try to embrace being a normal teenager, she jokingly asks for a fake I.D. so she can “go to clubs and take pot.” Her parents (Laura Dern and Sam Trammell) joke that she’s getting the marijuana slang phrase all wrong, and Hazel quips back, “That is the kind of thing I would know with a fake I.D.”

The trailer also includes Ansel Elgort‘s Augustus, who has been in remission, fears “oblivion” and fidgets with a cigarette to make a metaphorical point: “They don’t actually hurt you unless you light them,” he says. “You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you.” And when he tells her, “You trying to keep your distance from me in no way lessens my affection for you,” she gives her warning to why he shouldn’t get involved with her. “Gus, I’m a grenade,” she tells him, as he is shown carrying her through a hospital wing. “One day I’m going to blow up and I’m going to obliterate everything in my wake, and I don’t want to hurt you.”
Nevertheless, their two lives intertwine, as Gus tells Hazel, “I know that love is just a shout into the void and oblivion is inevitable, and I am in love with you.” He then tells her that she’s beautiful when they end up in a hotel room, as he helps her peel off her shirt that gets stuck around her breathing tubes.

Augustus’ best friend, Isaac (Nat Woolf), is also shown in blacked-out shades, blowing off steam by egging a sports car. The trailer closes with Hazel, who has a reignited passion for life: “I don’t have time to do everything, but this is my life, and it’s not over yet,” says Hazel, while Gus then adds, “It’s a good life, Hazel Grace.”
The Fault in Our Stars hits theaters June 6.
